The countdown for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup has officially begun as the ball changed hands to Qatar’s Local Organizing Committee. This momentous occasion unfolded during the halftime break of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Final in Manila.
Mr. Manuel V. Pangilinan, Chair of the Philippines Local Organizing Committee, initiated the handover by passing the ball to FIBA President Hamane Niang. With this symbolic gesture, the responsibility for the upcoming event transitioned to those tasked with ensuring its success – Mr. Mohammed Saad Al Meghaiseeb, President of the Qatar Basketball Federation, and Sheikha Asma Al Thani, Director of Marketing and Communications for the Qatar Olympic Committee.
Earlier this year, Qatar was announced as the host for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup, a decision driven by several key factors. Among these were Qatar’s compact geographical layout, the flexibility in scheduling tournament venues to enhance the fan experience, and a strong commitment to sustainability.
During the final phase of the event, 21 representatives from the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Local Organizing Committee in Qatar traveled to Manila to participate in the FBWC Observer Programme.
