The FIBA Oceania Zone Assembly has elected David Reid as the next Oceania President for the forthcoming cycle (2023-2027) in Gold Coast, Australia.
Reid has been elected as the first member of the FIBA Central Board for the period 2023–2027 after being chosen as the President of FIBA Oceania. This appointment will become effective following the 2023 FIBA Congress.
Reid, a former basketball player and coach, has served in a number of capacities for FIBA Oceania during the past 20 years. He is also in charge of Basketball New Zealand.
The Zone Assembly also elected the new board members:
- John Carey of Australia
- Megan Compain of New Zealand
- Jubilee Kuartei of Palau
- Frank Cruz of Guam
- Loane Naivalurua of Fiji
The recently appointed FIBA Oceania President, Reid, stated that the recent appointments to the Zone Assembly will help enhance the region’s progress over the next four years.
“It is a privilege to be appointed President of FIBA in Oceania and I look forward to working with the Board and our National Federations over the coming years as we continue to develop basketball across the region,” stated Reid. “We have unique challenges and opportunities within the region and l believe we are well-positioned to increase basketball participation on and off the court in Oceania over the next four years and beyond.,” he added.
According to the FIBA Oceania Assembly Report, basketball participation in Oceania has increased over twofold since 2019. This is a noteworthy accomplishment that reflects the National Federations’ and FIBA Oceania’s commitment to hard work and perseverance.
Additionally, the report demonstrated that basketball’s prominence in Oceania has increased. The success of the Australian Boomers and New Zealand Tall Ferns in recent years, as well as the increased media attention given to basketball in the area, are some of the contributing elements to this.
Last but not least, the report showed an improvement in Oceania’s National Federations’ capacities. Thanks to several measures, including giving National Federations training and resources and forming alliances with other organizations.
