The World Series of Poker (WSOP) has reached new heights with its 54th edition, as the Main Event smashes the previous record for the number of entries. The $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em World Championship has attracted an astonishing 8,774 players, surpassing the previous record set in 2006. The news was announced by Ty Stewart, the senior vice president and executive director of the World Series of Poker, who declared it the biggest Main Event in history and the richest live poker tournament ever.

World Series of Poker: A historic day and record for poker

Describing it as a “historic day for poker,” Stewart expressed his hope that this record will be short-lived, eagerly anticipating an even greater turnout in the future. The 54th edition of the World Series of Poker also marked a significant milestone as it returned to its roots at the Horseshoe. Founded by Benny Binion in 1970, the World Series of Poker was originally held at Binion’s Horseshoe Casino in downtown Las Vegas until 2004.

In 2004, the World Series of Poker was acquired by Harrah’s Entertainment, now known as Caesars Entertainment, which moved the tournament series to the off-Strip Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino. However, due to criticisms of the deteriorating conditions at the Rio and the rebranding of Bally’s Las Vegas as the Horseshoe, Caesars made the decision to bring the WSOP back to its beloved Horseshoe brand for the 2023 edition.

The return to the Horseshoe has proven to be a resounding success so far, with the WSOP Main Event attracting over 9,300 entries. This set a new record for the event and all of poker events, because they did not expect it to blow up as high as 9,000 even.

Ty Stewart expressed his joy at achieving this feat in the tournament’s first year at the new Horseshoe Las Vegas, attributing it to the unwavering passion of the poker community that comes together for this prestigious event every year.

What the future holds for poker and its community

This achievement signifies a resurgence in the popularity of poker, especially No-Limit Texas Hold’em. Just a decade ago, there were concerns within the gaming community about a decline in interest. However, the game experienced a boom in 2003 when Chris Moneymaker, an accountant, won the $10K Main Event after qualifying online.

This victory, known as the “Moneymaker effect,” sparked a rapid increase in WSOP Main Event participation, with the field growing to over 2,500 entries the following year and exceeding 5,600 entries in 2005. The pinnacle came in 2006 with a staggering 8,773 entries.

While there was a slight decline in entries between 2007 and 2016, poker experienced yet another surge in popularity in 2017 when the field reached 7,221. The Main Event continued to attract over 8,500 entries in 2019 before the pandemic caused disruptions.

The record-breaking turnout for the 2023 WSOP Main Event showcases the enduring allure of poker and its ability to captivate players from around the world. The World Series of Poker doesn’t only bring excitement and anticipation. The event is also bound to open more avenues for the whole poker community in the coming years.
